November 27, 2009 Representative David Obey Calls For War Surtax
President Obama is facing increasing criticism from senior Congressional
Democrats over the wars cost. David Obey, the chair of House Appropriations
Committee, has introduced a bill to impose a war surtax. Congressman Obey
discussed the proposed tax on ABC News. Rep. David Obey: On the merits
I think it is a mistake to deepen our involvement. But if we are going
to do that then at least we ought to pay for it because if we dont, if
we dont pay for it, then the the costs of the Afghan war will wipe out
every other initiative that we have to have to rebuild our economy. Thats
what happened with the Vietnam War which wiped out the Great Society.
Thats what happened with the Korea War that wiped out Harry Trumans Square
Deal. Thats what happened to the progressive movement back before the
20s when we went into World War I. In each case costs of those wars shut
off the ability to afford anything else.

November 19, 2009 Buy American Pot
We all know that a lot of people are harmed by prohibition, but who
benefits? Strangely enough, some of the biggest beneficiaries are the
bootleggers.
Sure, they take a big risk, but black marketeers don't have to pay taxes,
they're protected from foreign competition, and they benefit from artificially
inflated prices. Talk about protectionism. What kind of message would
an honest American Marijuana Growers Association have for us? "Thank
you for your support of marijuana prohibition and buy American pot!"
November 16, 2009 Dam Project Worries Sudan's Nubians
Hundreds of people in northern Sudan have protested against the construction
of a dam that is being built over the Nile, the world's longest river.
The lake that will result from the dam is expected to flood at least
15 villages,
which is home to more than 15,000 people. But the Nubian population of
northern Sudan is already familiar with having their hometowns flooded
by government-approved reservoirs. When the construction
of the Aswan High Dam was completed on the Egyptian border more than
50 years ago, much of their civilisation's rich past
dating back to ancient times was wiped out. Mohammed Vall reports from
the Nubian areas of northern Sudan where inhabitants say they are once
again under threat.

November 6, 2009 Was I Hired to Stand in the Way of Health Care Reform?
"Hi, I'm Andy and I did all the damage I could being a spokesjerk for
Blue Cross Blue Shield. Now it's time to move on to the next hugely
irresponsible, profit-driven monopoly...."
